This is the first time Kasi Lemmons has directed a film since Talk To Me back in 2007. I’ve always held Lemmons up as the prime example of a troubling trend in Hollywood: black female directors can’t find steady work. She’s made just four films since 1997 (the other two are Eve’s Bayou and The Caveman’s Valentine) despite making the kind of “indie breakout” pictures that would have put a white male director on “the list” for any number of superhero sequels or tent pole entries. So the fact that she’s back behind the camera is in itself cause for celebration.


As for what’s at stake, I’d argue not much. The film is explicitly religious enough to likely turn away much of the hardcore secular audience, and the fact that it’s a musical will turn others away. Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett are acclaimed actors, but they are not box office draws.  Jennifer Hudson is a potential wildcard as she never really had a star vehicle to theoretically capitalize on her Oscar-winning breakthrough turn in Dreamgirls in 2006.

The risk for Fox Searchlight on Black Nativity is probably very small. I don’t know the exact budget, but this looks and feels like a very cheap picture (small cast, a few primary locations, etc.). The very fact that it exists and is getting semi-wide release (1,500 screens) is something to be celebrated. It’s the very definition of the kind of film (a religious-themed holiday musical starring an African-American cast) you just don’t see in wide release today.

This one is clearly in the “that it got made means it already won” category. Any unexpected box office success beyond recouping the investment is merely a bonus, a bonus which will hopefully cause Lemmon to work a bit more frequently.
